Looking for a simple knitting project and a pop of foxy whimsy for the kitchen? This Fox tea towel is your solution! This tea towel will brighten any home, and since it’s made from cotton, it’s functional too!
I love this project because it’s simple and quick to knit, but doesn’t look it! Our fox tea towel is currently feeling very at home in our colorful bathroom where it lives with a tribe of gnomes. I’m sure they all talk about me while I’m sleeping.
Since this is the first pattern, I’ve made it free for personal use, but please don’t use it commercially.
For those of you who would like to print it, here’s the PDF version of the pattern:

- Button of your choice

Now that you have your goodies ready, let’s get started!
Instructions for the Fox Tea Towel Knitting Pattern
Cast on 40 stitches in main color (MC)
Row 1: Knit
Row 2: Purl
Row 3: Begin chart, starting on row 1, in bottom right hand corner
Continue chart, knitting on the right side, purling on the wrong side until finished.
If you’d like for this to be a simple washcloth, you can stop right here and bind off.
For the tea towel, forge ahead!
Next:
Knit 21 rows in stockinette stitch
Begin decreases:
K2tog, knit across row, k2tog
Purl across row
Repeat these two rows until 20 stitches remain
Buttonhole!
Form buttonhole in the middle of the piece and knit to end of row. Buttonhole placement will vary for everyone, depending on the size of your button.
If you’ve never made a buttonhole before, there are some wonderful tutorials on Youtube (I used this one).
Next:
Knit 15 rows in stockinette stitch
Continue Decreases:
K2tog, knit across row, k2tog
Purl across row
Repeat these two rows until 2 stitches remain
Bind off
Finishing:
Sew your chosen button onto the end of the piece on the wrong side.
Cut and sew your chosen fabric to the back of the piece. This step is optional, but it does make the piece look more finished and keeps the edges from curling.
Finally: Hang that tea towel in your kitchen and enjoy!
I hope you all enjoyed this fun pattern! If any of you lovely readers do make it, please post some photos on our Facebook page, I would LOVE to see them!

This is so adorable! What a perfect gift for any country or animal lover. I pinned this to make it later, thank you 🙂
Do you think I could make this as a scarf? I’m a beginning knitter and fox-lover. After looking at many fox patterns this is the cutest one I found.
Yes I do! As long as you sew some kind of backing onto it I think it would make a cute scarf! Let me know if you do it, I’d love to see the result! 🙂
I can’t understand this pattern at all. I’m used to knitting via written instructions. I have the basic gist down I think, but what I don’t get is how do you pick up and drop the colors for the hearts so they don’t bleed (so to say) into the next stitch? Is it fair isle knitting? It doesn’t make sense to me.
Hi there. This is very much like fair isle but not quite. It’s done as Intarsia. This article should help you to get a handle on it. https://www.interweave.com/article/knitting/about-intarsia-knitting-patterns/
